President Richard Levin
By Carrie Thiessen
Now well into his fourth year as the University's 22nd President, Richard
C. Levin, GRD '74, has won praise for his energy, interest in student
affairs, and commitment to the New Haven community.
His efforts to improve town-gown relations include the successful Homebuyers'
Initiative Program and the contribution of $1.9 million to the Broadway
renovation project. Levin has made great strides in repairing Yale's image by
restructuring the Office of Public Affairs.
In recent years, Levin made headlines for his firm stance on union contract
negotiations and student demonstrations. He was also instrumental in bringing
big-name bands to Spring Fling's main stage.
A former dean of the graduate school and professor of economics, Levin has
been at Yale for over 20 years. Colleagues say he is a man with a tremendous
and genuine love for Yale.
Dean Richard Brodhead
Some call him the coolest dude on campus. Who can blame
them? Richard Brodhead, BR '68, GRD '72, Dean of Yale College, is
President Levin's right hand man. He deals with faculty appointments and
funding allocation for various sectors of the University.
When you hear him speak at the Freshman Assembly, listen carefully to his
address. You'll notice a deft command of the English language and a subtle
sense of humor. His eloquent speech is due in part to his experience as an
English professor. His subtle humor and mischevous, fun-loving personality,
make him a very approachable administrator.
Dean Brodhead frequently meets with student leaders to discuss administrative
issues or answer grievances. He enjoys interacting with the undergraduate
community, as evidenced by appearances at student events, like facing the
freezing waters of a Spring Fling dunk tank.
Provost Alison F. Richard
By Matt Matros
The chief academic and budgetary officer of the university, Provost
Alison F. Richard is perhaps the busiest of Yale's administrators.
Except for President Levin, GRD '74, all deans, committee chairmen, and
educational officials must report to Richard.
"Faculty salaries are determined by a committee presided over by the Provost,"
Pierre Hohenberg, deputy provost of science and technology, commented.
In addition to these responsibilities, Richard chairs the University budget
committee, which prepares both the operating and capital budgets for
finalization by the Yale Corporation.
"Almost everything that happens at Yale goes through the Provost's Office,"
Deputy Provost Charles Long said.
Richard was born in Kent, England. She boasts a strong academic background,
having attended Cambridge before receiving her doctorate in primate biology.
Dean of Student Affairs Betty Trachtenberg
By Sheela V. Pai
As Dean of Student Affairs, Betty Trachtenberg is the
administrator who deals with the issues that affect the everyday life of Yale
students.
While infamous for her crackdowns on underage drinking at frat parties and
hamburger grilling at last year's Spring Fling, and strict fines for illegal
postering, Trachtenberg is also involved with many other aspects of student
life at Yale. Extracurricular activities, student organizations, and the
executive committee all fall under her jurisdiction.
Trachtenberg meets frequently with the YCC and the Undergraduate
Organizational Funding Committee to discuss student concerns and help plan
major events being coordinated by both.
"The Office of Student Affairs is here to oversee extracurricular activities
and to provide support for all students, especially new ones," Trachtenberg
said.
