Beyond Old Campus: Silliman and TD
Those freshmen who receive their housing assignments and
see the name "Silliman" or "Timothy Dwight" might feel an initial pang of
disappointment at having to miss out on "the Old Campus experience." However,
there is no need for regret. Ask anyone who lives in one of these two
locations--living in the colleges from the beginning has its own advantages.
Frosh are quickly integrated into thier college and get to know the
upperclassmen. They don't have to trek across campus to get to their dining
halls. The colleges themselves are in a prime location, putting residents
closer than anyone else to Commons, Science Hill, the Language Lab, and Naples
Pizza.
Freshmen in Silliman live in one of five predominantly freshman entryways.
Each room has a common area and two bedrooms, where roomates will share a
bunkbed. The frosh are divided into two areas. Entryways E and F constitute
"The Tower." These rooms boast high ceilings, fireplaces, window seats, and
easy access to the laundry room in the basement of E. Entryways J, K, and L are
known as "The Corner" and are located across the courtyard from the Tower, in
the brick section of the college. These rooms are slightly smaller but include
a fireplace and buil-in shelves. This section is connected to Silliman's
basement, so frosh need only walk downstairs to find laundry, the computer lab,
and the TV room.
Future Timothy Dwight residents also live in quads in the college's four frosh
entryways. The average floor houses two or three quads, a freshman counselor,
and a few seniors, a layout which takes advantage of the college's small size
and helpful upperclassmen. Each entryway has at least two floors of freshmen
and connects to other entryways via fire doors. While TD's rooms lack the dark
wood and high ceilings of Yale's famous Gothic architecture, its friendly
Georgian confines offer a bright interior, abundant lighting, and some of the
largest common rooms on the Yale campus.
So ignore Yalies who joke about the isolation of Silliman and Timothy Dwight.
They don't know what they're missing.
