FALL '99 varsity wrap up

CROSS COUNTRY

Men's Coach: David Shoehalter

Men's Captain: Rob Doyle, DC '01

The Elis placed a disappointing No. 9 in the league, but Doyle had a spectacular season, finishing fifth at the Ivy League Championship and earning First Team All-Ivy honors. Shoehalter will replace long-time coach Steve Bartold at the helm of both the men's cross country and track and field programs. In addition to Doyle, Shoehalter will rely on Jack Lovejoy, PC '01, and the incoming freshmen to improve the program.

Traditionally one of Yale's strongest fall teams, the volleyball squad won 17 games in the 1999 regular season. Coach Peg Scofield is the winningest coach in Yale history.

Women's Coach: Mark Young, ES '68

Women's Captain: Nancy Wolcott, BR '01

The team won the Harvard-Yale-Princeton (HYP) championship but expected its No. 7 Ivy League standing to be higher. Five out of six top runners will return, with incoming freshmen vying for the fifth, sixth and seventh spots. Young will miss the first month of the season to coach the U.S. Women's Olympic Track and Field team.

FIELD HOCKEY

Coach: Ainslee Press-Lamb

Captain: Anne Rippetoe, TD '01

Following a 15-4, Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship '98 season, field hockey finished the '99 season a disappointing 4-13 (1-6 Ivy), tying with Penn and Columbia for last place in the league. Yale had its lone Ivy win against Columbia. The team ended its season with six straight losses and suffered a five game losing streak in the middle of the season. The Bulldogs had one of the toughest schedules in the nation, competing against Virginia, Duke, and Dartmouth, ranked No. 9, No. 12, and No. 18, respectively. The Elis will try to rebound next year with new coach Lamb, an assistant on last season's team. Lamb replaces Marisa Didio, who surprised the team by stepping down from her position earlier this year.

FOOTBALL

Coach: Jack Siedlecki

Captain: Peter Mazza, JE '01

The 2000 Bulldogs bring back a banner crop of players who helped beat Harvard in The Game, capture a share of the Ivy League championship (9-1, 6-1 Ivy), and break 53 school records last fall. Seven All-Ivy picks, two All-New England choices, a pair of Academic All-Americans, and Siedlecki, the New England Coach of the Year, return to the Yale Bowl, site of the title-clinching, last-minute victory over Harvard before 52,484 last November. Mazza returns as the 124th captain to lead the 13-time Ivy Champions and 1999 HYP champs to a season of high expectations. The school's all-time leading placekicker, a receiver who broke the Ivy League's single-game record for receptions, and the school's all-time interception leader will be wearing blue again this year. Fifteen starters return for 2000, and 43 lettermen bring experience and depth to the Bulldog roster.

Wide receiver and 1999 captain Jake Fuller, BR '00, fights for extra yards in an early-season contest. The Bulldogs rebounded from one of the worst seasons in Yale football history to post an impressive 5-2 Ivy League record.

SOCCER

Men's Coach: Brian Tompkins

Men's Captain: Danny Moss, MC '01

Men's soccer finished 13-5-1 (4-2-1 Ivy), but after a disappointing loss in the final game against Princeton, the team ended up fourth in the league. Tompkins will lose his senior foundation, including Yale's all-time leading scorer, Jac Gould, CC '00, and is looking to his sophomores to assume leadership roles. The team will lose attacking speed but will try to exploit other skills and change the ball-possesion style.

Women's Coach: Rudy Meredith

Women's Captain: Jennifer Mendoza, BR '01

Women's soccer began the season 0-2 and suffered a late season three-game losing streak, but won its last two regular season games against Fairfield and Columbia to earn a berth in the ECAC tournament. The team bowed out in the first round to St. John's and finshed 8-8-2 (3-2-2 Ivy). The .500 season was a disappointment, as the Bulldogs had their sights set on an NCAA tournament berth before the three- game losing streak knocked them out of contention. While the Elis will lose First Team All-Ivy defender Lorelei Wall, SM '00, five of their top six scorers return, including leading scorer Chandra King, TD '03, and Second Team All-Ivy selection Lauren Gillies, MC '03.

VOLLEYBALL

Coach: Peg Scofield

Captain: Stephanie McMahon, TC '01

Peg Scofield, the winningest coach in Yale history, returns for her 16th year with the volleyball team. After beginning the season with two wins and finishing with losses to Princeton and Dartmouth, the Bulldogs were left with a 17-12 (3-4 Ivy) record. The Elis return middle blocker Colette Fitzgerald, SY '01—a three-time All-Ivy Honorable Mention and the third highest blocker in Yale history—to lead a strong corps of juniors and sophomores. The freshman class adds depth with two outside hitters and a setter, all expected to contribute from the start.
