Graduate School executives elected

By Diane Tran

The Graduate School Executive Committee, which addresses issues affecting the entire University, held elections for its three student members on Tues., Sept. 19.

Representing the Social Science Department will be Kamzi Gedeon, a student in the International Development Economics program. Scott Sloyd of the M.D./Ph.D. and Biophysics program will represent the Natural Science Department. The representative for the Humanities Department has not been determined.

Candidates interested in the positions usually nominate themselves and are later voted into office by students in their respective departments. Appointees to the committee are based on recommendations from the Graduate Professional Student Senate, which also is responsible for holding elections.

The Executive Committee, which meets every other week, consists of students, the Dean of Graduate Studies, the Assistant Dean, and faculty members. "The Committee addresses substantive academic issues that are important to the school's future," Jonas Zdanys, Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies, said.

Some proposals which the committee plans to consider this year include the implementation of a new McDougal Center and the creation of new Biological Science and Masters programs for graduate studies. According to Zdanys, actions taken by the committee directly affect the undergraduate community since students and faculty members from the Graduate School teach classes at Yale College.
