HUD gives Yale grant

By Sonushya Mathai

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has given Yale University a $2.4 million, three-year grant to be used in conjunction with other New Haven groups to rebuild the Dwight neighborhood. HUD secretary Henry Cisneros, Yale President Richard C. Levin, GRD '74, and New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. made the announcement on Thurs., Sept. 14 during a visit to the neighborhood located northwest of the Yale campus.

The grant is funded by the Joint Community Development Program administered by HUD's University Partnerships Office. "A university's considerable store of knowledge and expertise is a resource that should be put to use by the community," Cisneros said. Four other universities nationwide are also receiving funds under this program.

The HUD grant will be used with more than $6 million from the City of New Haven and the Partnership to Enhance Neighborhoods, which is sponsored by local banks and other contributors. According to DeStefano, the money will be coordinated with relevant city efforts.
