This year's squad is counting on a mixture of strong veteran leadership and youthful enthusiasm to help it improve on last season's disappointing campaign.
Coach Mark Young considers it too early in the season to make an accurate assessment of the team's capabilities, but he has been impressed both with the overall talent and depth of the squad. The team has "the potential to make things happen and nothing has done anything to change that [assessment] over the last few weeks," Young said.
Out of the 20 runners on the team, six are sophomores and eight are freshmen. "If we're going to achieve anything significant this season, the freshmen need to be a significant part of it," Young said.
Captain Hilary Norman, TC '96, agrees that the progress of youthful runners is critical to the overall success of the team, and commented that "having a young team is refreshing." She thinks that both the talent and depth of the squad will play a significant part in helping Yale re-establish itself as an Ivy League power.
Miller, who placed first for the Yale squad and 28th out of 300 overall at the Fordham Invitational, is pleased with the energy and commitment displayed by the team thus far. "We're working to build a team to contend in the future," she said.
The future begins now for the young Elis, as they travel to Durham, N.C., for a meet with Duke and Virginia Tech on Sat., Sept. 23, where they hope to reap the rewards of their renewed energy.
