By Raj Natli While You Were Sleeping (Fri./Sat., 7:30 and 10:00 p.m., Med School) HHH Like its star, Sandra Bullock, this movie is cute and charming, but not that deep. When BullockÕs character saves the life of her dream man, his family mistakenly believes that she is his fiancˇ. Through this error, she somehow manages to find true love. ItÕs a little cheesy, but still earns the title of Ņdate movie of the summer.Ó Das Boot (Sun., 7:30 and 10:15 p.m., Med School) HHHH This film manages to frighteningly recreate a 1941 U-boat mission. More familiar movies like The Hunt for Red October and Crimson Tide employ film techniques borrowed from Das Boot, giving the viewer the claustrophobic, tense feeling of being confined in the close quarters of the U-boat. The Killing Fields (Thurs., 7:30 and 10:00 p.m., Med School) HHHH This personal story of one manÕs struggle to survive is set against the backdrop of the revolution in Cambodia. It was adapted from a newspaper article written by a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and the film itself won three academy awards. If While You Were Sleeping isnÕt intellectually stimulating enough for you, this film might be your cup of tea. A River Runs Through It (Fri./ Sat., 7:00, 9:00, and 11:00 p.m., Spectrum) HHHHH In this movie, just as in Thelma and Louise, Brad Pitt proves that heÕs much better when he just smiles a lot, looks good, and doesnÕt talk too much. The real acting is left to the talents of Craig Sheffer, the filmÕs true star. Robert Redford sensitively directs this adaptation of the Norman MacLean novella about a changing family and the river that brings them together. Dead PoetÕs Society (Thurs., 8:00 and 10:15 p.m., Spectrum) HHHH ŅCarpe diem.Ó It seems a little clichˇ now, but before this film, most people probably didnÕt know what that Latin phrase meant. This movie introduced the phrase into our vocabulary, inspiring millions of boys to seize the day and millions of girls to dream of attending an all male boarding school with Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard. Smoke (Fri./Sat./Sun., 7:30 and 10:00 p.m., BobÕs) HHHH A Brooklyn cigar store serves as the backdrop of this film, with the well experienced cast including Harvey Keitel, as the cigar store owner, William Hurtz, Stockard Channing, and Forrest Whitaker. The cast had so much fun shooting they were able to make a pastiche of Brooklyn from the out-takes, entitled Blue in the Face. Shallow Grave (Thurs./Fri., 7:30 and 10:00p.m., BobÕs) HHHH This black comedy shows what happens when some roommates discover a corpse and a whole lot of money. Try and see how many freshmen you can convince that this is actually a documentary about the aftermath of room draw.
