Yalies in the News

Phil Baker, GRD '66, was recently named president of Proxima Corp., a manufacturer of desktop projection products. He will leave his post of vice president at Polycom Inc. Baker's credentials include positions as director of Entry PowerBooks at Apple Computer Inc. and director of product development for Seiko Instruments USA. Yale grad Maria Fernanda Cardoso, ART '90, is making big news wearing a cape and wielding a whip. She blows on Teeny and Tiny to coax them, and she works closely with Tarzan. Then there's Harry Flee-dini, the world's smallest escape artist. She is the ringmaster and creator of Cardoso Flea Circus. "I'm a serious artist," Cardoso said. After earning a master's degree at Yale, she exhibited her lizard, snake, and starfish art at major galleries in the U.S., Canada, and South America. Mark R. Cullen, MED '76, professor at the Yale School of Medicine, was one of the investigators conducting the Beta Carotene and Retinol Efficacy Trial (CARET). The study considered effects of a combination of beta carotene and vitamin A on the risk of lung cancer to participants who had been exposed to asbestos. Although findings are still inconclusive, results suggest that beta carotene supplements increase smokers' chances of developing lung cancer. Beta carotene showed no effect on nonsmokers. The cover of December's Mens Fitness magazine featured Yale University School of Medicine assistant professor of cardiology Harlan Krumholz, CC '80, wearing cabbage leaves, garlic, and other assorted vegetables. An expert in the field of cardiology, this "King of Hearts" was requested earlier in January to tend to the ailing heart of King Fahd of Saudi Arabia. This co-author of the book No Ifs, Ands Or Butts: The Smoker's Guide to Quitting has a cholesterol level of 150, which is kept in check by a healthy diet and regular exercise.
