Berkely IMs

Despite a season-opening loss, the women's hoops team shook off its early season rustiness and regained their form to narrowly edge Pierson 23-21 on Tuesday. The women's hoops' record now stands at 1-1. Halimah DeLaine '97 opened the game with a three-pointer. In spite of Berkeley's quick start, Pierson fought back and captured a 13-7 lead at halftime. Undaunted, Berkeley came out with a vengeance in the second half. Berkeley's grueling, in-your-face, man-to-man defense wore down the Pierson squad and forced numerous turnovers. Jenny Nelson '98 and Melissa Pressley '97 capitalized on these turnovers with easy layups. Berkeley finally erased the deficit, tying up the game at 21-21 with a minute to play. With 30 seconds left to play, Barrie Koegel '99, with Pierson players draped over her like a cheap suit, sank a clutch jumper putting Berkeley ahead 23-21. In the closing seconds, Berkeley's stifling defense prevented Pierson from getting any good looks, and Pierson was forced to put up a prayer. The prayer was not answered as the shot clanked off the rim and Berkeley was victorious. Sarah Overfield '99 continued her excellent play, providing a strong scoring punch as well as dominating the boards.

In other action, the men's and women's squash teams continued their domination, both easily disposing of Calhoun on Monday. Although rusty, the men's squash powerhouse is right on target for another championship. Also, the women's volleyball team handily crushed a pitiful Calhoun team on Monday. The women's volleyball team is off to a strong 2-0 start and seems destined finally to rid itself of the second-place curse.
