Halfway through the first full-fledged week of the winter leg of the quest for the Tyng Cup, JE continues to turn out record numbers of participants and enthusiasm. There were plenty of heroic performances to speak of, including a pulsating 44-40 double-overtime victory over Morse by the 4-0 men's B hoops squad, spurred on in the overtimes by the dynamic frosh duo of Ali Slater and Fred Lee, plus the demonic rebounding of Mike Capobianco '96. Meanwhile, the guys' A hoops team, which stacks up bigger than the varsity squad, upped its record to 4-0 with a 38-35 victory over Morse on two clutch free throws by Dave Prybyla '96 with eight seconds left in regulation to seal the victory. In a 4-1 hockey loss to Morse, Rachel Slayman '97 astounded everyone at Ingalls Rink with what seemed like a 50-save effort, stoning Morse snipers time and time again from point-blank range.

Our women's hoops team, building on last year's successful season, have opened their season with two convincing victories. Tuesday night, with a huge effort from Alyssa Pelkola '98 and new blood from frosh Sarah Lieberman, Anittah Patrick, Jen Chen, and Nicole "I can't find your last name" '99, the lady Spiders pulled away with a big 33-22 victory over Morse. Big contributions came from a trio of sophomores, Amy Terry, Emily Groom, and Kami Randolph, along with Lisa Wehner '96 and floor general Helise Coopersmith '96. Anne-Marie McNulty '96 and Kate Jones '96, still recovering from the fall of their Santa Claus decoration which had been suspended across their common room, pleaded with the Temptations staff to have mercy on them despite their self-proclaimed sub-par performances. We'll think about it. (Compiled by Charles Park '96, who sends along greetings from John Bowes '95.)
