There's a big day coming, Yale-Yo La Tengo will bring their eclectic pop to the Silliman Dining Hall on Fri., Apr. 12th for a mere $5.
Yo La Tengo's music is just as much about creating textures and grooves as it is about crafting poppy melodies and infectious choruses. Their music ranges from barrages of feedback and electric guitar to pensive acoustic ballads. The band is known for their entertaining and relentless live shows- they demolished Lollapalooza's Second Stage this past summer-but they're no new "buzz band." YLT's been around since 1984 and has released seven stellar albums since; the most recent, Electr-O-Pura is their most ambitious and cohesive to date.
Also on the bill are the Philistines Jr., one of the best bands you've never heard of. Tarquin Katis (bass) is America's #1 Mountain Dew drinker, which has to count for something. The Philistines' latest effort, The Sinking of the S.S. Danehower, tells the story of good friends Paul and Dave Danehower and their ill-fated boat. While few people know who Paul and Dave are, the Philistines write music in such a way as to include you in their friendships.
If you've been at Yale for over a year, you know who Holiday are. The band formed in the fall of 1992 when Matt Snow, MC '96, responded to a poster put up by Josh Gennet, TD '95, (guitar and vocals) and Andrew Park, SM '95, (bass). The band has come a long way since then, releasing a few seven-inches on their own Tasty Bits label, adding Calvin Chin, TD '95, (drums) to the lineup, and recording their 13-song debut album in two days in Chicago. Opening up the show will be Harvard's own Push Kings. Bassist Matt Fishbeck describes his band's music as "nostalgic pop." Virtual icons in Cambridge for good reason, they recently released a seven-inch, "Macy Macy" and "Pool Player," released on Sealed Fate, the Cambridge-based record label run by Eric Masunaga of the Dambuilders.
Don't miss the before-the-show cookout WYBC will be sponsoring in the Silliman courtyard.
