@Herald Pick the Pros!

For years, Yalies have been yelling at the paper at dinner time. "What a dumb pick!" sports fans would say when one of our sports editors would screw up on our weekly Smack Zone. Well, tough guy, now's your chance to show them who knows sports. Pick ten games. If you beat out the rest of Yale, then you get to star on the pages of the Herald as the next week's guest in the Smack Zone. Can you handle it? Try it out.

A night in the life of a Yale police officer: gunmen in red sweaters and computer thieves.

See the complete story.

In News: New Haven will soon be graced by a new mall to be located on Long Wharf. City officials hope it fares better than the failed Chapel Square. Some students are mad about being kept out of the architecture major. LGBT Co-op members are protesting the Defense of Marriage Act which forbids federal recognition of gay marriages. Despite budget cuts, volunteering at Yale is alive and well. The Elm City gets a new brewery, author John Irving visits campus, and the university hopes for a safer Tap Night this year. And, of course, Around the Globe.

In A&E: Student film is thriving on campus; so are the Crabs, who play in Silliman Friday night. We've got reviews of the new releases from Guided by Voices' Robert Pollard and Tobin Sprout, The Loud Family, and Nas. Your professor might be a rock star if you're an MB&B major. We also let you know what you'll be wearing soon with a preview of fall fashions. A Yale alum has turned aliens at Niagara Falls into a movie, Niagaravation. And Minor Threats lets you know what's up, G.

In Sports: We preview the Ivy League football season. This week's Elitorial examines women in sports, while one columnist gets misty-eyed over the U.S.A. winning a hockey tournament again. Volleyball looks to have an excellent year ahead of itself, as does our Athlete of the Week, Neill Guilbert. Rugby has three All-Americans. We also let you know what's happening at home this week. And there's always Smack Zone, in which Sarah Holley tries valiently to avoid having her car repossessed for poor performance.

In Opinion: Alex Zubatov writes about religion and eating disorders; Ilan Mochari thinks you're all a bunch of academic wooses. Darcy Miller makes a rare morality spotting in Washington, while Mary Hong think a column last week blamed churches unjustly. Drew Faehnle writes on DOMA, Christopher Ribiero on Yale's treatment of the deaf, and Heather Hammer on the dining halls.

In the rest of the paper: Our fiction this week is by our old favorite, Jess Row.
