Saybrook Intramurals

We've entered the new year, and Saybrook continues to struggle for excellence. We'd like to compliment our rival Stiles on their sportsmanship and nemesis TD on their bright new t-shirts. However, we'd like to point out one thing: Davenport and Saybrook tied in hockey in the first game. A tie with Saybrook does not count as a victory unless you live in TD.

Saybrook a-hoops has made a massive turnaround from last year, thanks to football stars Rob Masella '97, Tim Reed '97, David Pegg '98, and Blake Kendall '97, the Pierson southpaw phenom Paul Sohn '99, seniors Andrew Minor and Royal Hansen, and sophomores Jeremy Rissi, Adrian Delmont, Francis Idehen, and Leonard Law. They earned impressive wins over Davenport and JE before the break. c-hoops also scraped its way to a 24-17 victory over Pierson. Sophomore captains Uday Gorrepati and Matthew Matros led the way, and the team was fueled by the scoring of sophomores Asad Ahmed, Ethan Youngerman, John Whipple, Kevin Irwin, seniors Alexander Ching , Jason Karlinsky and Themistoclis Protopsaltis, and freshman Eric Rodriguez.

Women's and men's volleyball have fought their way to a combined 6-0 record. The women, led by Gail Tipayamontri '97, and sophomores Julie Zeglis, Lorky Libaridian, Nami Soejima, juniors Lynn Kessler, and Martha Surridge, and freshmen Natasha Bloom and Teri Hickey, have frightened their opposition into two early forfeits. Men's volleyball cruised to victory overJE and Morse with the strong performances of new players Irwin and Rissi and without the aid of superb spiker Dan Classen '00.

Women's hoops fell in a valiant effort to a legion of JE basketball players. Led by captain Tammy Mentzel '97, and fueled by the scoring of Robyn Harris '99 and Rachel Gruzen '00, and the strong play of Elena Saxonhouse '99, Monique Vulin '99, and Nia Edwards '98, SY came back from a 14- point deficit. They nearly closed the gap, bringing the score to 24-20, but it was not enough, for, in the end, the JE height and depth took its toll on the Saybrugian squad.

Winter is still young, yet many colleges have closed to within extremely dangerous margins in the standings. Arise, Saybrugians, and fight for your college. Points are becoming harder to get and we need your help.
