![]() | Pierson IntramuralsWow! In my three years here, Pierson has never had a season even close to the one we've had this winter. With two teams winning IM championships and at least four others contending right 'till the end, Pierson has made the jump from eighth to fifth in the Tyng standings. And though it's not nearly so coveted, Pierson is only one point out of second place in the Davies Cup standings (for the college with the greatest participation), a proud fact for an IM secretary. As predicted, the Pierson men's volleyball team won the championship. After two hard-fought victories over SY and MC, the team of senior captains Steve Liu and Ted Sunidja, Alex Lin '98, Dan Skodol '98, Andy Lam '98, Kurtran Wright '98, Mike Janik '98, Mike Lynn '99, Jed Roher '99, Matt Janik '00, and Tom Lo '00 finished the season 9-2. With nine out of 11 players returning next year, Pierson looks forward to continued greatness. Going into the last week of the season, the women's volleyball team, led by captain Natsuko Yamamoto '97, still had an outside chance at a championship with a 7-2 record. Obviously, PC is the early favorite to win the spring co-ed volleyball championship. The other Pierson team to capture shirts was the 11-0 bowling squad, led by captains Steve Ness '97 and Leigh Brezler '97. Women's hoops finished the regular season 7-0 and, after demolishing Branford in the first found of the playoffs, lost a defensive struggle to JE in the championship, 19-15. Seniors Sierra Fletcher, Leigh Brezler, and Regina Murphy should be commended on a great final season. After a shaky 3-4 start, the freshmen-dominated a-hoops team finished the season 7-4 and looks forward to taking home the shirts each of the next three years. That is, if no one leaves early for the draft. Waterpolo finished the season at 8-3, thanks to captain standouts Matt Easter '97 and Jess Magda '97. Led by senior captains John Choi and Eddie Hamner, the men's squash team finished 8-3. And finally, the Pierson swim team qualified for the championship meet and finished the season with a 6-4 record. Pierson is looking forward to springtime improvement. Last year, spring was our best season, so let's make a run up the standings. Spring IMs start right after break, so bring back your baseball gloves and soccer cleats. We might be down, but we are nowhere near out. It ain't over till the physiologically obtuse individual of feminine persuasion makes melodious sounds from the depth of her vocal cords. An additional note: Pierson has named two new intramural secretaries, Matt Janik '00 and Santosh Aravind '99, so feel free to approach them with any IM questions. In the meantime, begin your spring training now, and I hope to see you all at the fields after break.
