Morse

"Settling for mediocrity, nothing can be expected of Morse." With the Swami's words emblazoned in the mind of every Morsel, Morse has quieted its critics with an impressive September performance. Maintaining a spot amongst the IM elite, Morse has proven itself a force to be reckoned with.

Perhaps the greatest surpirse of the young IM saeson has been the sudden reemergence of Morse football. Coming off a 1-21 record last year, Morse has shot out of the gate to a 5-3 record. A mystifying defense, engineered by captain Zak "Between the Lines" Pines '00, leads the squad. Thanks to forfeits and late-arriving opponents, Morse has racked up its five victories without ever crossing the goal line. When asked to step on the field, T.J. "Max" Gordon '98, freshman phenom Shivan "L.T." Mehta '01, Zeke "Mowatt" Vanderhoek '98, and--every Morsel's source of pride and inspiration--Dean Glenn "The Wall" Wallach, have gotten the job done. Four wins by forfeit? There's only one explanation: "We eat your fear."

Many thought this would be a rebuilding year for the Morse men's soccer squad, but those people couldn't have been more wrong. An infusion of young blood has maintained the Morse soccer powerhouse. Spearheaded by seniors Jake "Ignorance is" Bliss '98, Jan "Sweet 'N" Lo '98 and Seth Searls '98, the team is 2-2 despite losing one game by forfeit. Searls scored two goals in Morse's 3-1 comeback win over Saybrook. The team's deep and talented roster is filled with experienced stars such as sophomores Stephen "JAH" Fahy, Jonathan "the Terminator" Thessin and "Between the Lines," as well as frosh Colin "the man with a" Pan, Socrates "The Good and Beautiful" Kakoulides, Paolo "Jorge" Campos, Dirk Van Der Bos, David Wertime, and Mike Hoevel.

Morse certainly has been successful on the fields, but it is the racquet sports where Morse truly dominates. Morse's 3-1 tennis team is riding high atop its division and is in line to finally put an end to the college's IM championship drought. Led by undefeated Andre-Phillipe Mistier '00 and captain Roel Gutierrez '00 on the men's side and freshman Deborah Bauer and captain Amy "Michael" Chang '00 for the women, Morse has the goods to go all the way.

Morse ping-pong has been equally dominating. Its biggest obstacle has been postponements of matches resulting from varsity volleyball practices taking up the gym space. The team is captained by the skillful trio of Melanie Schoenberg '99, Denitza "Underhand Bomb" Blagev '99--who gets extra training for ping-pong because she's on the women's varsity tennis team (I won't tell Meghan)--and Ikenna "Ouagadougou" Ogbaa '98.

Morse has arrived. Be very afraid!
