Pierson

Pierson's 3:45 intramural soccer game had just ended and we were short two football players for our 5:00 game. Six courageous Pierson men had travelled from our cozy courtyard to the big scary IM fields to take on Trumbull's football team, but two more men were needed to avoid forfeiting either the coed or men's game. Thank goodness, "Jesse" James Yoon '00 is in Pierson because he stepped forward and saved the day. "I don't want to see Pierson forfeit!" he bellowed. Yoon then did his best to coerce a player out of the crowd. Still the team was lacking players. Yoon valiantly waited til one more Pierson football player jumped off the IM bus and the football game was ready to begin.

Yoon, who had never played IM football before and was unaware of the fact that the Pierson men's team had won one game in the past four years, was added to the men's squad. He never played high school football, wasn't the biggest or fastest guy on the field, but he sure was the hottest. Wait, sorry, I'm getting off track, and the darn delete button doesn't work. Anyway, on Pierson's opening drive James found a spot in the back of the end-zone to catch Pierson's first touchdown of the game and give us a 7-0 lead. After falling behind 14-7, James "Mr. Clutch" Yoon again caught a touchdown pass to tie the game.

Regretfully all the glory in this story comes in the beginning. A team of eight Trumbull freshmen who didn't even know most of the rules of the game finished with a 28-14 victory. Pierson proved too slow and too tired (with no subs) to pull this one out in the end. But one loss evidentally isn't enough for Pierson. Later that night Pierson's table tennis failed to field a team, creating Pierson's first forfeit of the season.

Thanks to James Yoon those football players who made the trip out to the field were able to play, the Trumbull team didn't haveto return to Elm Street without mud adorning their cleats, but most importantly, James Yoon had a good time. He hasn't missed a football game since.

For those reasons James Yoon is the Pierson Player of the however-long-before-I-write-the-next-article. He's not the only Piersonite who's saved Pierson from forfeit this season; Shannan Smith '98 and Maria Castro '98 played golf for the first time in this season's Bordosi Gold Tournament to fulfill the female portion of the team. Shannan played on the foursome that tied for third overall. Last Tuesday Shannan journeyed to the volleyball courts to stand in the corner and fulfill the needed female portion of the coed team until another player could come late from section. Jay Ozuna '00 stayed after a football game and played in his first ever soccer game to avoid letting down the seven men who had made the trip out. He's played in every soccer game since.

So please play Pierson IMs. You don't have to have played in high school or in past years here. You don't even need to know the rules of the game. Look in next week's Pierson Weekly for the upcoming week's schedule and come out to a game. If you're not sure where to go or how to get there, ask someone who plays IMs or contact one of the intramural secretaries (Mike and Matt Janik and Santosh Aravind). It's worth the effort. Learn a little lesson from James Yoon. "A beginner can be the differerence between getting crushed and coming kinda close." James Yoon, this one's for yoon!
