Pierson

I have this cousin who played basketball. She wasn't nearly as good as our women's hoops team. And she was good. She used to beat my dad all the time. But my dad wasn't all that good though.

Our team last year was undefeated in the regular season but lost the championship game by one point. That was with this year's star captains Shannan Smith '98 and Saskia DeVries '98 injured for the final game. With Corey Nakata '99 and our special secret weapon (I promised not to reveal it), referees will sure be shaving off time our 60 point wins. And that's if they bother keeping score. Piersonites who don't play bastketball (or aren't women) should find the time to come watch some home games.

On top of that, Pierson is the defending champion in bowling and men's volleyball. This year's "heavy ball" captains are Jaime "The Man" Harrison '98 and Nakata. Dan Skodol '98 will be vital to the team as well because he did nothing all summer, except bowl. That is also why he will be challenged to find playing time on this year's incredibly deep men's volleyball team. Returning from last year are nine players who had substantial playing time, including five starters. Tom Lo '00, Mike Lynn '99, and Alex Lin '98 will help carry Pierson to a volleyball championship every season this year. And our women's team, with a strong freshman class and a solid returning core led by Anita Kishore '99 could make it four championships this year.

Waterpolo, despite losing stars to graduation and the club team, has a good shot at the crown as every college's team seems quite weakened from last year. Turnout at least shouldn't be a problem--Piersonites look too good in bathing suits to stay away from the pool.

The week's featured athlete is Dan Koehler '00. Sorry Dan, you don't get the fanfare we gave James, but everyone knows you're good.

So the gym's not too far away, and games start next week with a beefed-up pre-break schedule, so make a committment to at least one team. We are aiming for a solid fourth-place position by the end of the winter, repeating last year's climb.

(Compiled by a lost soul whose only goal in life is to play on Captain Burke's soft-
ball team.)
