Adult entertainment

By Dan Wilchins

After working for three months at the Nu Haven Book and Video store, Rachel has learned more about human nature than you might imagine. "All kinds of people come in here," she said, "businessmen, bums, young people, old people. If I've learned one thing here, it's that just about any type of person can be interested in adult videos. As long as they mind their own business, it's fine with me."

Rachel tries to mind her own business, too. Nu Haven features a series of adult video preview booths upstairs. According to Rachel, "I let customers do whatever they want up there, as long as they're alone and they're paying."

As Thanksgiving advice, Rachel recommends you "be sure to have fun. And don't let your parents catch you smoking pot."

Rachel's face soured when I asked her about whether she's going home for Thanksgiving. She took a long pull on a carton of orange juice. "Home where I grew up? I'm not going back home for Thanksgiving," she said. "My mom's a real bitch. She's really mad that I'm working in Nu Haven. She's always trying to get her nose in my personal business. It's a real drag."

But Rachel is not cynical when it comes to the holidays. "I love my husband and close friends," she said. "We're spending the holiday together, and I'm looking forward to it. Even if I don't get along with my mother, I think you should love your family."
