Pearly Sweets: rockin' piano man

By Ian H. Doescher

Somewhere between God and man is Pearly Sweets. The Timothy Dwight South Common Room will be ringing with rock and roll Thursday night as the near-deity brings his show to campus.

Pearly Sweets is a half-man, half-myth rock star extraordinaire who, with the power of his voice and his piano, dares to take audiences on a thrill ride through the best rock and roll has to offer. His energetic, honest style refreshes, and his instantly memorable songs have been stunning his contemporaries since he arrived on this planet almost 20 years ago. He is one of the last great rock and roll performers, and the power of his lyrics alone can drive audiences to lust, fear, and idol-worship. Take, for example, a sampling of the lyrics to his song "Choose Your Husband Wisely": "When you start your mating, never look him in the eye/ If his body shape repels you, perhaps he's witty, sharp, and sly/ These things will sustain you when all your casseroles get cold/ Tell him you're imperfect, tell him one day you'll get old."

Some call him thrilling, others evil, but one thing is certain: Pearly's daring music flabbergasts all who see him. Even those not usually moved by rock and roll find his music and style irresistible. His sharp piano playing and limber voice make for a raw style of music found in no other performer of our generation.

Happily, the only thing better than a Pearly Sweets song is watching Pearly perform it. His style is rare and exciting because he actually performs: he talks, jokes, curses, shakes, shimmies, and interacts with the audience. His performances sustain a sense of danger--neither Pearly nor his audience know what might hap-pen next. He accomplishes a rare feat, at once keeping his audiences completely at ease and bringing them to the edge of their seats as they await his next move.

Luckily for Yalies, Pearly has deigned to bring his show to our campus. The concert begins at 10 p.m. and, in keeping with Pearly's nonconformist ways, will cost only one dollar. His latest album, That's What All the Girls Say, will also be available.

Even if you're not usually a rock and roll aficionado, this show guarantees to be the hottest attraction on campus this Thursday. Pearly's concert will change the way you look at rock and roll forever. It seems only fitting to end with another soundbite, this one from Pearly's song "It's Around":

You say that you got style, so where's your uniform?

You think you mastered my language with your cuneiform?

But you're all images, baby, just like Life Magazine,

There ain't even any lines for me to read between...

Read between the lines Thursday: Pearly Sweets is here to rock.
