Ian Dallas

Ian Dallas, SM '00, distances himself from artists; he considers himself a graphic designer. He has been designing since his freshman year of high school, when he first started working for his high school newspaper. Although he took a college basic-drawing class while in high school, his heart still lies in creating functional design. Dallas explained, "I was raised in magazines and newspapers. I'm much more into functionality, simplicity and readability."

He has applied that philosophy to numerous projects and jobs while at Yale. He is a layout editor and illustrator for The Yale Daily News Magazine; a layout editor, illustrator, managing editor and web designer for The Yale Record; and a graphic designer for the Yale Daily News. He also often works for various campus groups on freelance projects. Dallas has been working for six months on what he said will be "the largest site for underground Internet culture," Scenelink.

Dallas creates some images for his work using computers. "I've done some 3-d modeling on my own. I can draw from a picture, but I can't draw a picture," he confessed. He likes the digital medium because of the control it offers. "A real image has infinite possibilities," he said. "Digital art," he added, "allows you to take control of each pixel."
