David Kinsey

David Kinsey, a first-year graduate student in the Yale School of Art, "expected a little of a bias here" against digital art when he first arrived. But he has been pleasantly surprised. "So far, 95 percent [of Art School atudents] have accepted, actively encouraged or motivated me."

Kinsey received his undergraduate degree from the Ringling School of Art & Design, which was itself very open to the use of technology in art. "It's notable for computer art. Disney recruits heavily there."

Kinsey has used computer technology in his pieces in a number of different ways. He recently displayed his portfolio at an Art School open-studio show. In one piece he used a digital camera to take a picture of one of his paintings, and then manipulated the image in Photoshop. In another work, Kinsey overlayed a computer-generated image of a section of machinery on a photograph of a section of one of his paintings. He also created art with completely digital methods, using FormZ, a 3-D modeling program.
