Silliman

"NO points?" seemed to be the buzz around the entryways of Silliman after last week's standings. But softly, the Sage replied, for the warriors of SM intramurals had played but one contest (a six-over, 10th place finish in IM golf), and soon, with the beginning of this week, began the road to countless conquests for the only residential college on its block.

It only makes sense to start with our 2-0 soccer drumming of Saybrook. Damon "Leif" Erickson '98 has posted two of the three Sillimander goals this season, and "Rotten" Robby Luckett '99 has spoiled just about every opposing offense's appetite. Meanwhile, Josue "Maradona" Mendez '98 and Jon "Ham on" Rye '98 have kept the middle a mosh pit for messing up enemy attacks. Frosh Caleb Weaver, Sinton Vignos, Ben Harvey, Daniel Guss, and many others have ensured that the Class of 2001 is indeed the future of Silliman's Fall Fanatics. With a steady stream of players, look for the red, yellow and green to be contenders for the cup. Sillimanders continued to pound their would-be adversaries on the grass ... in lawn volleyball. In their fall debut, Ernest "E-man" Morris '00, Su Son "of a Gun" Yeang '00, Seung "Not Bruce" Lee '98, Gary "Sometime Violinist" Huang '98, The Brett-"stroke" Libresco '99, Lillian "Whirlwind" Wang '99, Luckett and captain Shane "Grey Poupon" Dizon '00, handed TD a severe thrash-Tyng to the tune of 15-4, 15-1. (Nothing like beating TD to fix your spirits.) In addition to turning the six-foot net into a one-way brick wall, Rocket Robby Luckett served out the second half of the first set, with Dizzy D doing the same with a confounding serve in the second set. Things look ever bright for the Silliman spikers...look for them to be in the running for Silliman's first shirts.

In the continually-improving sport that is men's touch, 2001 has again proven to be the Silliman odyssey. Led by freshman phenoms Darius "No Mistakes, I'm" Fewlass '01, "Rejectin" Rafael Vranizan '01, "Pistol" Paul Stowell '01, and Ed Jager "meister" '01, and seasoned sophomores Greg "G-Dog" Wierzynski '00, "Kirk" Kamran Ansari '00, and Mike "Bullet" Beman '00, the men have managed to score before the fifth game of the season, and upped the production with two scores against Saybrook. Unshaken by losses to the 'Brook and perennial powerhouse Calhoun, this young team, captained by Paul "H.P." Le '99, should keep lighting up the end zone.

Lastly, women of Silliman! I take it, from numerous observations, that you do exist? Yet your college can not see you on the fields! At press time, both co-ed tennis and ping-pong are sitting beneath the axe of seasonal forfeit due to the lack of mighty Silliwomen, and co-ed touch football hath already fallen to the absence of female power. Don't let this happen! Women's soccer can't always get a forfeit (as it did this week against Trumbull-Saybrook), and other sports just can't afford one! So represent, ladies, and join the Silliman march to IM victory!

(Compiled by a secretary torn between publication loyalties...if only for the love of intramural sports.)
