Davenport

Some call it complacency. Others refer to it as laziness. We like to think of it as contentedness. Regardless, it took a little while for Davenport IMs to get the gears cranking this semester. But oh, are they cranking now.

Several dedicated D-porters are taking the games particularly seriously. Inner tube water polo co-captain Mike Zimmer '01 said, "This is no laughing matter. I am only taking three credits this semester so as to focus on aquatic dominance." Hmmm—we'll overlook that game against Morse. Zimmer certainly has a good supporting cast. Early in the week, D-port IMs enjoyed great turnouts. Especially impressive was the number of guys who gave up their valuable Ally McBeal time to crush Saybrook on Monday night. Special congratulations are in order for Annie Lux '02, who bit through an opponent's tube to prevent a goal in Tuesday's skirmish.

While we are on the subject of dedication, let's not forget about squash captain Amar Drawid '00. He can be spotted in the dining hall balancing trays with waiter-like precision in one hand while the other hangs in a sling. How does this relate to IMs? you ask. Well, this unfortunate injury occurred while Mr. Ironman was braving the sub-zero temperatures to train for the spring frisbee season. "Spring season? Jiminy Cricket, it's still January!" you say. Well, I guess we're just that hardcore in Davenport.

We ran into one of the bowling captains, Dana Peck '02, in the gym bright and early one morning this past week. Although obviously too focused on the weights to give us much of her time, she did deign to enlighten us a bit. What's the key thing to her power you may ask? Triceps. Very important. Without a good backswing, the rest of your game just doesn't amount to a hill of beans. We won't divulge any more of her secrets, but suffice it to say, this is one sport where fitness won't be an issue for the men (or women) of D-port.

It would be wrong of us to end this IM report without mentioning the other eight D-port IM squads (certainly pulling their share of the weight this season), but as the D-port IM motto goes, sometimes we just have to do things we know are wrong.
