Morse

Not everyone can live up to predictions. Not everyone is a Morsel. Morse has been under a lot of pressure to perform this year, as many predicted that we would finish the year in first place.

Come Christmas Break, this prediction was holding true, but our lead was not quite as solid as we might have hoped. Morsels had something to say about that.

In the first two weeks of the new semester, Morse has jumped out to a commanding lead in the race for Tyng Cup glory. Other teams have begun to wonder whether they can even make it into second or third place.

C-hoops and ice hockey have led the way, as both teams remain undefeated thus far this season. C-hoops captain Brian Lizotte '00 has led an inspired team, along with fellow seniors James Lopes '00 and Yoshimi Endo '00. Big men Andrew Whealy '02 and Pete Lokken '00 have helped solidify the middle, while several others have proven reliable role players coming off the bench.

Hockey has been blessed with the goaltending of Lauren Kinnee '02, who has made many crucial saves for the skaters. Eric Ramsay '03, Blake Green '02, George Malcolmson '03 and Ian MacAllister '00 have all provided the team with stellar play as they try to repeat as hockey champions.

Both men's and women's squash have jumped out to 2-0 starts, thanks especially to the play of Eranthie Weerapana '00 and Trygve Bakken '01, in addition to the help of Mansoor Razzaq '03. With their extensive depth, both teams should be threats all season long.

Both A-hoops, led by Dirk Van Den Bos '01 and captain Mike Gordon '00, and B-hoops, led by Alex Stegall '02 and Warner Off '02, have posted near-perfect records on the season and find themselves near the top of the standings in their respective leagues.

Women's hoops, led by fantastic play by Marjorie Friedman '03 and a host of others, has posted a respectable record, as have both the men's and women's volleyball teams and coed inner tube water polo. Men's volleyball has been particularly stellar and should be lauded for its play against an undefeated JE team, which it took to three games thanks to the dedication of a plethora of multi-talented Morse IM athletes.

The pressure on Morse to lead the pack hasn't stopped us yet. The way things are going thus far in 2000, it may not effect us until well after the Final Tyng tally has been calculated.
