Super Bowl Predictions

XXXIV

It's time for Super Bowl XXXIV, when the best of the NFL gets together to play some football and kick the crap out of each other. Quarterbacks will be sacked, tears will be shed, and feelings will be hurt, assuaged only by incessantly pounding one another into the turf. At the end of the day, either the Tennessee Titans or the St. Louis Rams will go home champions, and the other will go home crying to their mommas. After a crazy season that saw the Titans squeak into the playoffs as the wild card with a 13-3 record while the Rams cruised to the top of their division, this season-ending matchup will determine bragging rights for the new millennium.

The Herald polled a few of Yale's most influential faculty, athletes, and students to find out which team has stolen the hearts of the Elis:

"Dear me! My predictions never come true, and the teams I care about have been sent to the lockers long since. Since they've beaten everyone else I favored, I'll have to go with Tennessee to win. How big? I'd guess by either 20 points or one point. So let's say: Tennessee 33, St. Louis 14, or Tennessee 21, St. Louis 20." —Yale College Dean

Richard Brodhead, BR '68, GRD '72

"Not only do the Tennessee Titans roll off the tongue better than the St. Louis Rams, but Kurt Warner has every reason to worry while the Titans know they can win. Oh, and I dig Eddie George. In this case, without a bye week, attitude will be everything. Titans by five, with an over/under of 46." —Political Science Professor

Allan Stam

"With two surprise teams in the Super Bowl, this year's game is a tough pick. Even though the Titans beat the Rams earlier in the season, the Rams will prevail by the score of 30-24, with Marshall Faulk scoring three TDs." —Yale quarterback

Joe Walland, TD '00

"St. Louis Rams over the Titans, 24-17. Kurt Warner's going to take them all the way." —Yale wide receiver Eric Johnson, JE '01

"Tennessee 28-27. I think Steve McNair is the man—he has a rifle for an arm. He doesn't even have to put the ball in the air, he can run it or give it to Eddie George. I think the Titans are unstoppable. St. Louis is going to have to step up their defense to try to keep McNair down. It's probably going to come down to who makes the other team make mistakes. It's going to be a very tight game." —Yale College Council President

Jamie Ponsoldt, MC '01

"If the Ravens can get John Franco back to New Haven in a Binghamton Mets uniform, I imagine they have a chance. All it took was an inning and a third, and professional sports in the Elm City were changed irrevocably. Oh, and Tennessee will crush the Rams under a mighty 21-point spread." Yale Herald Editor-in-Chief

Dan Silk, SY '01
