The sexy sommelier

On a date with that special someone (or two), a drink can set the first spark or make a soothing nightcap. New Haven isn't Venice, but it's also not Detroit—there are a number of perfect places to sip martinis or share a bottle of wine with your Valentine lover.

Union League Café: An elegant establishment rarely frequented sans parents, it features a large, chic bar set off from the rest of the restaurant. The tables are ideal for drinking a certain je ne sais quoi anytime.

Tibwin Grill: A wonderful spot for both a romantic drink and an incredible dinner. The atmosphere is lively and not at all suffocating (the restaurant is smoke-free). Almost all of the 94 wines on their list are offered by the glass at reasonable prices—a very rare luxury.

Caffe Adulis: This African dream doesn't only proffer incomparable Eritrean eats—it makes yummy cosmopolitans, too. And if your date likes to be shaken, not stirred, get an inventive martini from their long list.

Galileo's Bar at the Omni Hotel: This bar is upscale and pleasant, but the main aesthetic attraction is the breathtaking panoramic view of, yes, New Haven. If you ask the friendly bartenders nicely, you can stroll with your drinks to take in the view. Oh, and the rooms are too expensive. Nice thought, though. —Michael Gitter
