Smack Zone
Chen--Well, not a stellar start to the semester. But when you're up against rookies, you can afford weeks like this. Anyway, I'm going to devote my picks to Sunday's Big Show. I'm sorry, folks--it's not going to be much of a show. Give me a Packer win ($1,000) as they will easily cover the spread ($1,000). Davis will be squashed for under 100 yards ($750) while Favre will toss for two first half TDs ($500). The Pack defense is just too damn good. You have to feel for Elway, of course, but it is going to be a long night--three sacks for the Pack ($700). Final score: Green Bay 30, Denver 16.Last Week: +$1,000. Current Balance: $6,000.
Lin--Chen's trying to fix Smack by prohibiting Smith and me from betting on our beloved Bulls. Well, it's not our fault that his loyalties have to lie with the Wizards. So I won't bet against the Nets and Grizzlies, but I will take the Bulls for $800 over the vengeful Jazz, and my hometown Celtics to beat those Wizards for $500. On the Yale front, $500 for men's basketball to make it two straight against Brown and $500 on men's hockey. For the cultural event of the month, $1,500 on Green Bay and $10 says that the winner of the Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes says "Oh my God" at least once. Last Week: +$800. Current Balance: $5,800.
Smith--After having so much success in my first outing last week, the sweat beads on Chen's head are starting to grow to uncontrollable sizes. Give me $400 on the Bird-less Celtics falling to the Pacers. On Sunday, the heart of the Broncos will overcome the confidence of Green Bay. Sorry Lin, you're wrong, just admit it. $600 that Denver will be behind going into the 4th quarter, and another $400 that the final will be 24-21 Broncos. In Yale action, men's squash will squash Cornell on Saturday for $300 and men's hockey will show Army how to be all that they can be for another $300. Last week: +$1,650. Current Balance: $6,650.
George Hall, guest--Having properly defined my measure space, probability measure, and filtration, I computed the current observation of the stochastic process describing the optimal realization of smacks. Here they are ($800 each): Elway, fourth time ain't a charm. Green Bay will have the Super Bowl wrapped up half way through the second quarter. Without Steffi and Monica, look for Venus to make it to the finals in the Australian Open. Back on the home front, men's basketball will wipe their Doc Martens on Ivy League doormats Brown and Dartmouth. Celtics: Bird will do it to you again--this time in Indiana. Starting Guest Balance: $5,000.
George Hall is an assistant professor of economics.
