Sports Shorts
Basketball
...The men's basketball team (8-8, 3-1 Ivy) made it two
straight over Brown on Sat., Jan. 24, defeating the Bears 60-53 in Providence.
Facing a 48-42 deficit with only four minutes left in regulation, the Elis went
on an 11-0 run. Isaiah Cavaco, JE '01, clinched the victory with four
free throws in the last 10 seconds. Team captain Emerson Whitley, SY
'98, led all scorers with 26 points, including 16 in the first-half alone.
David Tompkins, SY '99, contributed eight points and eight
rebounds. The men, who have now won four in a row and five of their last six,
look to continue their hot streak with home games against Dartmouth on Fri.,
Jan. 30, and Harvard on Sat., Jan. 31 at the House of Payne.
...The women's basketball team (7-9, 1-3 Ivy) didn't fare as well against the
Bears, dropping its second straight game to Brown on Sat., Jan. 24, by a 65-57
count in Providence. Center Katy Grubbs, SM '99, had a team-high 12
points. Freshman Lily Glick, ES '01, had 10 points and seven rebounds,
while Natasha Archer, MC '99, added seven points and nine rebounds. The
women travel north for contests with Dartmouth on Fri., Jan. 30, and Harvard on
Sat., Jan. 31.
Gymnastics
...On Sat., Jan. 24, the Yale gymnastics team put away Vermont 183.225-178.150
at Payne Whitney. Rookie Katie Kleiner, DC '01, won the vault with a
score of 9.275 and had 36. 92 in the all-around. Kerri McNamara, ES '01,
contributed 36.90 all around points. Nicole Hoffman, BR '01,
won the uneven bars and floor exercise with two scores of 9.550. In the only
home Ivy meet of the season, the Bulldogs will host archrival Penn on Sat.,
Jan. 31, at 1 p.m. Betty Ky, TC '00, will try to match her personal
best all-around score of 37.425, which she earned in last year's
meet against Penn.
Ice Hockey
...In their last non-ECAC game of the season, the
Bulldogs defeated Army 5-1 before 3,486 fans packing Ingalls Rink for Youth Day
on Sat., Jan. 24. With this win, the Blue improved to an unbeaten 7-0 record at
the Whale. Keith Fitzpatrick, TD '00, and Matt Cumming, JE '98,
both scored in the first period, assisted by Mark Turco, DC '99, Brad
Dunlap, SM '98, Jeff Brow, SM '00, and Jeff Hamilton, SM '00.
Near the end of the first period, rookie Lee Jelenic, TD '01, tallied
the first goal of his Yale career with a long slapshot. In the third period,
Hamilton scored, assisted by team captain Ray Giroux, BK '98, and
Daryl Jones, PC '98. Brow finished the scoring with about five minutes
left to play on assists from Andy Young, SM '98, and Cumming. Team
captain Giroux contributed two assists in the victory. In only his fourth
career start, Trevor Hanger, SY '00, had 31 saves and stopped all 10 of
Army's power play attempts. Regular starting goalie Alex Westlund, SM
'99, sat out the game against Army , but is scheduled to start on Sat., Jan. 31
against Princeton. The Elis downed the Tigers by a 3-2 margin on Sat., Dec. 6,
when the squads met earlier in this season in New Jersey.
...The women next see action at Providence College on Sat., Jan. 31. The last
meeting between the Bulldogs and the Lady Friars on Sat., Dec. 6, resulted in a
5-3 Eli victory. The Bulldogs' next Ancient Eight opponent will be Brown, which
they face on Sun., Feb. 1. The last time the two teams met, Brown won 4-1,
breaking a four-game Yale winning streak. The team also has a mid-week matchup
on Wed., Feb. 4 against the Division III Middlebury College Panthers at Ingalls
Rink.
Squash
...On Sat., Jan. 24, the men's squash team blanked
Cornell, 9-0, then went on to crush Fordham a few hours later, winning all nine
matches by a 3-0 score. Strong performances were turned in by John
Lukens, JE '99, and Kris Weiner, PC '00. Navy and Tufts visit on
Sat., Jan. 31.
...The women also defeated Cornell 9-0. Key wins came from top three seeds
Carla Shen, TC '99, Loren Smith, SY '00, and Marion
Ringel, TC '99. The women will host Amherst on Sat., Jan. 31.
Swimming
...The men's swimming team met Seton Hall on Sun., Jan.
25 and emerged victorious, 128-98. Mike Caperonis, CC '00, Tim
Saunders, ES '01, and Stewart Hitchner, PC '01, all contributed with
wins in the 200-, 500-, and 1,000-yard freestyle events, respectively. Senior
diver Jason Wyland, TC '98, was victorious in both the 1- and 3-meter
dives for the Blue.
...The women's swimming team also beat Seton Hall on Sun., Jan. 25 at Kiphuth
Pool, winning 134-94 by taking 11 of 14 events. Laura Schned, BK '01,
won the 200-yard freestyle and Maya Hamilton, BK '01, won the 1,000-yard
freestyle race. Adding to the team victory, freshman Shannon Dunlap,
BR '01, won the three-meter diving event. Both men's and women's teams have a
tri-meet against Penn and Dartmouth on Sat., Jan. 31, in Philadelphia.
Track
...With a score of 111 points, the men's indoor track
team garnered second place in the consolation round of the New England
Challenge Cup on Sat., Jan. 24. The seniors had a strong showing in Boston,
with Dennis Manning, TC '98, running the 500-meter in 1:05.70 and Eli
Huge, MC '98, running a 2:29.18 in the 1,000. Cross-country captain
Chris Karas, SM '98, completed the mile in 4:11.15. Building on the
success he enjoyed in his rookie season last year, Jac Gould, CC '00,
ran the 200-meter dash in 22.24 seconds to place third. His time went into
record books as the third-fastest indoor mark in Yale history.
...At Yale's Coxe Cage on Sat., Jan. 24, the women's track team placed first in
the consolation round of their New England Challenge Cup with 221 points.
Trudy Taylor, BK '99, won the weight throw. Seniors Deborah Levy,
BK '98, and Nia Edwards, SY '98, won the high jump and the triple jump,
respectively. Laura Boniello, SM '99, won the 55-meter hurdles.
Jennifer Newsom, JE '01, won the 200-meter dash and Emily Estey,
BR '01, added a win in the 800. Both men's and women's squads will compete at
Boston University's Terrier Classic on Sat., Jan. 31.
