Smack Zone

Chen--Although it was the best Super Bowl I've seen, it made for my worst Smack performance ever. In any case, the season is young and these two haven't proven anything yet. Give me Hingis and Korda down under ($1,000 each) while the Lakers show why they're currently the NBA's best team ($800). Huge weekend for men's b-ball. Give me the Bulldogs over Harvard for $750 while men's hockey ices the Tigers for $1,000. Last Week: -$2,950. Current Balance: $3,050.

Lin--The first time in many moons a girl has been second-place in Smack! Not a great week for me, but not as bad as Chen's. $250 each on men's hoops beating Harvard, hockey sweeping Princeton, and gymnastics overcoming Penn. A big weekend in Philly--$250 for both fencing and swimming to come home with victories. Finally, $250 on men's squash to sink Navy and women's squash to squish Amherst. Last Week: -$790. Current Balance: $5,010.

Smith--This game is so fun! I mean, I am good. Did everyone catch which sports editor predicted who would win the Super Bowl? Thanks. Give me $500 on the Bulls over the Lakers. Shaq is probably off recording another bad rap album. I'd also say that the Nuggets won't come within 15 points against the Bulls for $300. In college hoops, I'll take Connecticut over Villanova for $500. In the NHL, $600 on Hawks-Ducks. At home, men's hockey will destroy Princeton for $500 and men's hoops over the Cantabs for $400. Last week: $0. Current Balance: $6,650.

Allan Stam--Skills, knowledge, and attitude, baby--I've got $5,000! $500 on Tiger to go top five at Pebble Beach--no way O'Meara makes it number six--and $500 says Alice Cooper eats Kevin Costner's lunch. Gotta love the Tractor, so $500 on Michigan to take out the Hawkeyes on the road--now that's a long shot! Closer to home, we all know the Tigers can't do it on the road, and our fellas are on fire (when was the last time we were top 10 in anything besides an upper-class sport like polo?), so we'll go $750 on the men's hockey team to beat Princeton. To balance the ticket, $250 says the women will, uh, score, at Brown (hey, it's tough on the road!). I know the lightweights aren't exactly killing themselves this winter, but $500 says at least one fat-weight oarsman boots in practice this week. My lock is for the women's fencing team to take down the Quakers--$1000 on that one. Harvard sucks (do they blow too?), so $500 on the men's hoopsters to edge the Crimson whatevers. Finally, $250 on Trudy Taylor, BK '99, to win the toss and $250 on Jennifer Newsom, JE '01, to medal. Last week: $0 Current Balance: $5,000.

Allan Stam is an assistant professor of Political Science.
