Smack Zone
with guest Peter Salovey
Chen--So, Lin and Smith think they're something, do they? Just
wait...after this week, I'll be back on top. That's a guarantee. Duke gets
revenge over UNC at Cameron for $1,500. Men's ice hockey bounces back at home
with two easy wins ($2,500 each), and a men's basketball win over Dartmouth for
$800. In the NBA, with CW back, the good old 'Zards take down Dallas by double
digits for $1,500. Last Week: -$600. Current Balance: $8,950.
Lin--Looks like another regrouping week. Back in Boston, I'll
take the Celtics over the Warriors for $1,000, and the Bruins over the
Islanders for $800. A little red bird in the A&E section told me that the
Rangers might surprise the Flyers for $500 and beat the Sabres for $750. Up in
the Great White North, Montreal and Toronto combine for fewer than five goals
($750). At The Whale, men's hockey finishes it off at home with wins over the
Green and Vermont ($1,000 each). In spring sports, I'll look for softball to
conquer Army ($500) and men's lacrosse to defeat Drexel ($500). Last Week:
-$1,450. Current Balance: $10,060.
Smith--If I'm going to lose money, I'm not going to be the first
to go broke. But at this rate, Chen and Lin are going to be filing Chapter 11
while I still have enough money for a few hearty slices at Broadway (and a free
drink, thanks to my cute little star) before I go down. I'll show you...for
starters, I'm putting $500 on the Trailblazers upsetting the Celtics at the
Garden. In the NHL, how about $700 on Hawks over Stars, and $600 on the Devils
over the Flyers? Back at home, I'm putting $750 on each game in men's hockey,
and $650 that women's basketball takes the matchup of the week against the Big
Green. Last Week: -$550. Current Balance: $10,500.
Guest Peter Salovey--Even if my students nicknamed me "Sneaky Pete" some years
ago, it doesn't mean I know anything about gambling. After all, it took four
bets on Buffalo to win the Super Bowl to learn my lesson. Let's start with
fencing. All I know is that you do it in a "salon." Sort of like a poetry
reading. But those photos of Ayo Griffin, SM '00, and Katie Zuckerman, JE '99,
are pretty cute, so either the men, women, or both will top the IFAs this
weekend ($750). Men's hockey beating Dartmouth and Vermont looks like a sure
thing ($1,000 each). Did you know that in two days back in November, Laurie
Belliveau, TD '98, stopped more than 100 shots on goal? Amazing that she can
still find The Whale after that! I'll also bet that her squad beats Harvard
($500). That's it. Now make me look good.
Last Week: -$999.50. Current Balance: $13,200.
Peter Salovey is a professor of psychology.
