...On Sat., Jan. 31, the men's squad (15-4, overall, 10-2
ECAC) defeated Princeton for the second time this season before a capacity
crowd of 3,486 at Ingalls Rink. The Tigers scored both their goals in the first
period. Just 29 seconds after Princeton scored its second goal on the power
play, Matt Cumming, JE '98, netted Yale's first tally on an assist from
Jeff Hamilton, SM '00. Eighteen seconds into the second period, Mark
Sproule, SY '00, evened the score at 2-2, assisted by captain Ray
Giroux, BK '98. Rookie Ben Stafford, BR '01, picked up the
game-winning goal off of a Cumming pass. Both defenses kept the final stanza
scoreless as the Blue hung on to win, 3-2. Princeton netminder Erasmo
Saltarelli and ECAC goals-against-average leader Alex Westlund, SM '99,
each notched 27 saves. Forty-two penalties were assessed against the teams, for
a total of 100 minutes in the penalty box. Infractions included numerous
roughing calls and six counts of unsportsmanlike conduct (two on Yale center
Cory Shea, BR '00). Nevertheless, head coach Tim Taylor and many players
contended that neither team intentionally played a dirty game. The Bulldogs are
now leading the ECAC with 20 points and are currently ranked sixth in the
USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Poll, the highest national ranking
ever for a Yale hockey team. The Elis meet Cornell at 7:30 p.m. on Fri., Feb.
6, and Colgate at 7 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 7.
...The women's hockey team dropped two straight matches in Rhode Island over
the weekend. Goalie Laurie Belliveau, TD '98, had 35 saves against
Providence on Sat., Jan. 31, and 48 more against Brown on Sun., Feb. 1. On
Wed., Feb. 4, the Elis rebounded with a defeat of Division III opponent
Middlebury 3-1. Joni Kletter, TC '00, Sue Vanderhill, CC '01, and
Lisa Meyers, SY '01 scored for the Blue, while Sue Barnes, DC
'00, added two assists. The Bulldogs will take on St. Lawrence on Sat., Feb. 7,
and Cornell on Sun., Feb. 8.
