Shaky start in the sun

By Peter Smith

Despite losing four strong players to graduation, this year's men's lacrosse squad hopes to be a force in the Ivy League. Fourteen experienced players return from last year's squad, and a strong crop of freshmen add talent to the team.

Over spring break, the squad spent the first week training in Boca Raton, Fla. On Mon., Mar. 9, the Elis lost a mismatched game against top-ranked Syracuse 17-3. Returning to Yale, the Bulldogs rebounded with an 8-5 win over Vermont on Mon., Mar. 16. Brian Shure, BR '98, had three goals, Coddy Johnson, DC '99, and Brad Graw, SM '99, added two each, and Chris McIntyre SY '00, contributed a goal and two assists.

"Defense came together pretty well after the Syracuse game and intensity has been high, but offense has not been producing at all," midfielder and leading scorer Graw said. "But we show flashes of good things that hopefully should bode well for later in the season."

On Sat., Mar. 21, Yale lost to Cornell, 6-3. Shure, Johnson, and McIntyre scored for the Blue while Joe Pilch, SM '99, had nine saves in the net. The Bulldogs travel to Princeton this Sat., Mar. 28, for the second Ivy League game of the season.
