Men's Basketball: Happy ending to a see-saw season

In a fitting end to the season, the best the Bulldogs could do in their final weekend was split. In a season where they struggled for consistency, the Bulldogs finished with their finest league performance in four years, ending on a winning note with a 75-67 victory over Dartmouth on Sat., Feb. 28.

The men finished third in the league, behind Princeton and Pennsylvania. They improved their record to 12-14 (7-7 Ivy), the highest win total since the 1991-92 season, when the team went 17-9.

Guard Matt Ricketts, TD '98, played his final game in style against Dartmouth with a career-high 24 points, including five three-pointers. Captain Emerson Whitley, SY '98, also playing the final game of his undergraduate career, added 15 points.

The weekend, however, belonged to David Tompkins, SY '99, who posted consecutive double-doubles. In the 81-77 loss to Harvard on Fri., Feb. 27, Tompkins had a career-high 23 points and 13 boards. Against Dartmouth, Tompkins had 15 points and 13 rebounds. Tompkins finished the year .664 from the field (101-152) and .724 in the Ivies (71-for-98), which set a league record. "We played pretty well as a team," Tompkins said. "But it's hard to be satisfied with our performances when we don't win."

Despite these individual successes, it has been a season of near-misses for the Elis. The team dropped two heartbreaking overtime losses, including one at Pennsylvania, a game which they had led by 20 points.
