Club Corner: Men's and Women's Lacrosse

By Peter Smith

With classes and other extracurricular activities, many Yalies simply cannot make the required commitment to a varsity sport, no matter how much they love it. Although intramurals are one alternative, they tend to be too laid-back for some students. To solve this problem, a group of non-varsity athletes have formed men's and women's club lacrosse teams--the perfect middle ground.

The men's team, headed by Ben Wei, SY '00, and Tim Jacobi, DC '00, has been practicing for about a month. There was a club lacrosse team last year, but not many people knew about it. "The practices are going really well," Wei said. "We've had a lot of people come out this year, especially when the weather has been nice."

In these practices, which are held behind the Connecticut Tennis Center, the team does four-on-four drills as well as stick training. There is a wide range of ability on the team, so much of the time is spent practicing the fundamentals. As for equipment, the squad purchased helmets from the men's varsity team, and, according to Wei, "There are several places in the area where people can get equipment for cheap prices."

The players have not had a game yet, and though they do not have any scheduled, they plan to contact the club teams at Columbia, Princeton, and the University of Connecticut to schedule contests.

The women's team is a bit further along. Formed in October by Adiya Dixon, BR '00, Alexa Romberg, JE '00, Rebecca Goodman, BR '00, and Bailey Hand, MC '00, the women have had more time to schedule games and practices. They trained inside during the winter and returned to the field when the weather permitted.

They have five practices a week (on the same field as the men's club team), but the players are only required to show up for three. The practice is not quite as structured as the women's varisty team due to the lack of a coach, but as Romberg remarked, "It's still a tough two hours."

The women have played three games this year. They played at home against Fordham on Sat., Mar. 28 and lost 5-4. The next day, they played at the University of Rhode Island and lost 4-3. On Sun., Apr. 5, they competed against NYU and lost 8-6. "We're still encouraged because the scores were really close," Karen Westen, TD '00, said. The team has one more game this year, on Sat., Apr. 18 at home against Princeton's club team.
