Coming back to life

By Alice Kim

After a dismal 3-8 start, the Bulldogs have found a nice rhythm. Despite their Tues., Apr. 7, loss to Seton Hall, in which the Pirates battered Eli pitching for 17 hits en route to a 13-2 triumph, the Blue has won eight of its last 10 contests.

The Eli squad swept Pennsylvania on Sun., Apr. 5, with 6-5 and 10-8 victories. In the first contest, captain Tommy Kidwell, CC '98, doubled, tripled, homered, and had four RBIs. Ben Johnstone, BR '00, added three hits, including a solo home run.

All season, the pitching staff has been the most consistent component of the team. On Sat., Apr. 4, Eric Gutshall, TD '98, shut out Columbia 3-0, giving up only two hits while fanning 12. For his efforts, he was named Ivy League Pitcher of the Week. "Good defense and good pitching is what's gonna win for us, that's our formula for success," Kidwell said. As for their recent success, Kidwell pointed to consistent hitting in propelling the squad. "We pitched and defended before but we didn't hit. Once we put everything together, we're a decent team," he said.

The Elis have doubleheaders with Cornell and Princeton on Fri., Apr. 10 and Sat., Apr. 11 at Yale Field.
