Off to a rough start

By Deirdre Brill

The women's golf team competed on Mon. and Tues., Apr. 6 and 7, in the Campbell Invitational in North Carolina. Five golfers, captain Natalie Wong, MC '98, Charity Barras, MC '98, Margret Bell, MC '98, Ilona Paulin, TD '98, and Rachel Brakemen, JE '99, traveled to the tournament. This was the first time in several years that all the team's seniors qualified to travel.

After the first day of play, the Bulldogs, with a score of 331, were in seventh place among the tournament's 12 teams. Barras, who has returned to the team after a fall semester in Germany, was the squad's low scorer with solid first and second round scores of 80 and 79, respectively. Wong came in second for the Elis, shooting 77 and 83 in the two rounds. Yale finished with a discouraging 334 in the second round. "I am disappointed with how we did because we didn't finish in the top three which was our goal," Wong said. "But we also have to take into account that it was our first tournament, while for many of the other teams it was their last tournament of the season. It was still neat to have all the seniors travelling to the tournament, though."

The women are now preparing for the Ivy League Championship, which takes place from Sat., Apr. 18 to Sun., Apr. 19, where they hope to achieve a repeat of last year's stunning 38-stroke victory.
