Men's crew: Finding the right speed

All the men's boats won their races on Sat., Apr. 11. The heavyweights hosted Dartmouth on the Housatonic River in Derby, Conn. The Bulldogs crushed the Big Green under fast tailwind conditions. Yale's varsity defeated Dartmouth by 10 seconds, with a time of 5:30.6. The junior varsity eight beat both the Green JV and third varsity boats by large margins with a time of 5:41.8. Both Eli freshman eights also won, although by smaller margins.

"We're finding our speed right now," JV oarsman Rob Welhoelter, JE '99, said. "We're pretty comfortable with the lineups and the top boat is more based on power than it has been in the past." Looking forward to racing on Philadelphia's Schuylkill River this weekend, Welhoelter said, "We beat [Pennsylvania's] JV in San Diego but you never know."

The lightweight squad raced MIT on the Charles River. Yale's varsity annhilated MIT with a 6:05.3 tie to the Tech's 6:20.1. The junior varsity boat continued the onslaught over Tech, 6:20.6 to 7:02.2. The first freshman eight won its race as well, and the two Yale fours beat MIT's second freshman four by almost twenty and thirty seconds each.

Both squads will race Pennsylvania and Columbia in Philadelphia on Sat., Apr. 18. The heavyweights aim to take the Blackwell Cup from Pennsylvania and the lightweights will defend the Dodge Cup.
