Men's crew: Yale schools on the Schuylkill
Yale's heavyweight crews go south to race Cornell and
Princeton for the Carnegie Cup on Sat., Apr. 25. Coach Dave Vogel's, DC '71,
varsity boat is currently ranked number one in the Eastern Assocation of Rowing
Colleges (EARC) coaches' poll. The lightweights take on three EARC opponents
this weekend. In their only home races of the season, coach Andy Card's crews
face Dartmouth and Rutgers for the Durand Cup on Saturday and host Cornell on
Sun., Apr. 26. Racing begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday.
On Sat., Apr. 18, both squads raced against Pennsylvania and Columbia in
Philadelphia. Both heavyweight freshman boats won their races, but the JV
oarsmen lost by three-hundreths of a second to Pennsylvania. Nevertheless, the
powerful varsity eight took the Blackwell Cup with a time of 5:32.5 to
Pennsylvania's 5:35.8.
Host Pennsylvania was not a factor in most lightweight races as Yale and
Columbia battled it out on the Schuylkill. In several races, the Lions
challenged Yale early, but the Elis pulled out significant wins, retaining the
Dodge Cup with a varsity win (5:40.3 to Columbia's 5:44.7).
