A fool's paradise for streaking ballplayers

By Dan Brodhead

On a soggy April Fool's Day at Yale Field, the baseball team extended its current five-game winning streak with an 11-5 win over Wagner College. As in the four double-header wins against Sacred Heart and Wagner last weekend, the key to this win was Yale's offense. Captain Tommy Kidwell, CC '98, had three hits and three RBIs on the afternoon, but he was only one outstanding performer in the Elis' offensive onslaught. Five other batters had two hits each. "Lately the hitters have been coming through," Kidwell said. "We've had solid pitching and good defense all season, and those are the keys to winning an Ivy League title. Our offense had to work out some kinks early but now it's on track."

In particular, Yale has recently been able to produce big innings. Scoring four runs in the second and five in the sixth on Wednesday, the Bulldogs were able to get into a productive offensive rhythm. "Earlier in the year we'd get hits, but they'd be spread out over the course of the game." Tony Coyne, BK '00, said. "Now we're stringing them together, batting in runs, and winning games."

Strong defense, something Kidwell has emphasized since the beginning of the season, also proved crucial. Yale committed only one error while Wagner botched five plays.

"We're playing pretty well right now but we are definitely capable of playing better." Coyne said. "And we'll have to when the Ivy League season starts this weekend." This weekend the Bulldogs head to Columbia and Penn. When asked how he sees baseball's chances for an Ivy League title, Kidwell said. "I wouldn't bet against us."
