Bulldogs suffer through a tough week

By Christopher Burke

Often, the difference between winning and losing cannot be seen in the box score. It's often the intangibles that separate a locker room celebration from a somber bus ride home. The Yale women's softball team (10-16, 0-0 Ivy) can trace their recent strugggles to the little things that decide games.

"We need to cut back on our mental errors," team captain Cory Nakata, PC '99, said. "Also, we've got to do a better job getting hits with runners in scoring position."

The lack of production in big spots hurt the Buldogs early in the week, as they dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Sat., Mar. 28 to a tough Providence squad. The Blue lost the first game 8-2, and couldn't gain the split, succumbing to the Friars by a
6-0 tally in the second contest.

Yale picked up its only win of the weekend the next day, however, as the team earned a split against Vermont. The Elis dropped the first game 9-0, but came back to defeat the Catamounts 4-3 in eight innings in the second game. Freshman Alice Liu, SY '01, executed on a squeeze bunt in the eighth, bringing in Kathy Ching, BR '00, from third to win 4-3.

Nakata credits the younger players for their tenacity. "The frosh have really come through," she said. "They've made a big impact, and that's been important for the team."

The Blue closed the week by getting swept in a doubleheader (2-1, 6-3) against Connecticut on Thurs., Apr. 2. They host a pair of games against Fairfield on Sun., Apr. 5 at Yale Field.
