Field Hockey: Bulldogs bounce back from loss, gain national ranking
The game of field hockey is one of response: how a team
responds to a quick offensive rush, how a player responds to her opponents
making key halftime adjustments, and how a coach responds to the team before
heading into overtime. This past week, however, the Bulldogs (6-1, 2-1 Ivy)
combined these game elements of response with one even greater: how to come
back from a Ivy League defeat at the hands of Brown on Sat., Sept. 19.
The Bulldogs rebounded admirably with a 3-2 overtime win against Harvard on
Sat., Sept. 26, catapulting them to a No. 18 national ranking in this week's
STX/HFNCA poll.
"One of our goals this year was to be ranked, and the Harvard victory helped
toward that goal," Amanda Walton, SY '02, said. "The win really pumped everyone
up for the rest of the season. We were really excited."
Building off the momentum from the Harvard win, the Blue dominated Lehigh 2-0
on Tues., Sept. 29. Yale followed up that win with another victory, this time a
5-0 defeat of Ancient Eight foe Columbia on Thurs., Oct. 1, to notch its sixth
win of the year. Walton scored four goals, doubling her season output entering
the game.
Yet the Ivy challenge certainly does not stop there. On Sat., Oct. 3, the
Bulldogs take on No. 4 Princeton, who come to New Haven with a 7-0 record.
Captain Lindsay Hobbs, PC '99, says the Bulldogs will look to finish their
three-game homestand on a positive note. "Judging from our play this past week,
we feel that we're up to the challenge," Hobbs said.
In a game and season of responses, a victory over the Tigers may be the signal
that this year, it will be the opponents' turn to respond to Yale.
