Football: Elis give up most points in school history
The University of Connecticut cheerleaders have a
ritual. Following each Husky score, they do as many pushups as Connecticut has
points. On Sat., Sept. 26, the cheerleaders were busy, completing a total of
315 pushups during the Huskies' 63-21 rout of Yale.

Connecticut's high-powered offense rolled over the Bulldog defense early and
often, scoring touchdowns on its first five possessions. For the game, the
Huskies amassed 554 yards of total offense. Their 63 points were the most ever
surrendered by a Yale team in 126 years of football.
That the Bulldogs allowed such a high point total is as much a product of
Yale's defensive weakness as Connecticut's offensive strength. For the second
straight game, the Bulldogs struggled to force punts and penetrate the
defensive line. For the season, the Elis have recorded only three sacks, and
the opposing teams have only been forced to punt once.
Colgate (2-1) visits the Yale Bowl on Sat., Oct. 3, at 1 p.m. Like
Connecticut, the Red Raiders are explosive offensively, boasting two
outstanding receivers in R.J. Gregory and Corey Hill; both were named
ESPN/USA Today Division I-AA Players of the Week for their performance
in last week's defeat of Harvard. "Colgate is a good team," captain Corwynne
Carruthers, MC '99, said. "But we'll be ready. The defense didn't really come
to play against Connecticut, but we'll be ready on Saturday."
While the defense turned in a lackluster performance last week, the offense
faired well, totalling 366 total yards, and the special teams unit
successfully converted a fake field goal and a fake punt. Another positive
outcome? "We don't have to play [Connecticut] again next year," Yale coach Jack
Siedlecki said. The Husky cheerleaders would probably agree.
