Women's soccer: An offense re-emerges
The women's soccer team put an end to its offensive
drought and kept its hopes for an NCAA bid alive with a 4-0 trouncing of Army
on Tues., Oct. 20. Facing a squad that lacked the skill and depth of recent
opponents, the match-up gave the Elis an opportunity to play their
characteristic aggressive style of soccer. "We were able to get into our own
rhythm and initiate things, which was a bit of a relief," commented stopper
Danica Liberman, TD '99.
Liberman said the game was a "stepping stone" for the team in terms of
advancing to the NCAAs, but the Bulldogs must win all of their remaining games
in order to get an invitation to the tournament.
The chemistry and unity of this year's team, however, makes the thought of
tallying a perfect record for the rest of the season conceivable. Team captain
Annie Kwon, CC '99, said this year's team is much more "enthusiastic and
supportive" than in past years, and added that the freshmen have been a major
factor in creating a more cohesive Bulldog squad. The freshmen have provided a
spark off the bench. As the Bulldogs are a relatively young team, with only
three seniors on the roster, they seem set for success in coming seasons.
The players are not looking that far ahead yet, however, and are staying
focused on their current goals. "It's basically a countdown" Liberman said of
the rest of the season. The team takes it's next step towards it's goal on
Fri., Oct. 23, at home against Columbia
