Double intolerance

To the editor:

As a Christian and a liberal, I would like to respond to Chris Mooney's patronizing and insincere article on gay bashing, "How Christian is gay bashing?" [10/23/98, YH]. Considering that Mooney's previous articles at Yale have claimed, among other things, that Christianity is a morally inferior system of ethics and that Mother Teresa was evil, it is of little surprise that Mooney's main purpose in the article is to attack Christianity, not to defend homosexuals.

It is obvious to any sensible individual that the "Christian" Coalition is just a wing of the Republican party and that Pat Robertson is about as mainstream as Pat Buchanan. While they pay lip service to the pro-life cause, their main concern is symbolic victories and lowering taxes, not social justice. They attack homosexuals because it is politically expedient to do so. Mooney's assertion that the "Religious" Right represents mainstream religion only furthers their cause, and his attempt to spread irrational fear of Christians ("Pegging all Christians as anti-gay would be premature -- but not by much...They are the veritable exponents of an American theocracy in which gays -- and indeed all non-Christians -- will be relegated to second-class citizens, quashed, abused, or far worse.") is itself intolerant.
