Smack Zone

Carl Bialik
NB may be Wonder Woman, but I'm eating her for lunch like Wonder Bread. But last week was so good, I won't dignify my "competition" with any more Smack. Football didn't dignify Columbia last weekend, and they'll spank those Quakers ($1,000). Look for me at the game--I'll have a blue "Y" painted on my chest. And $50 on my roommate getting some play while I'm gone. In other play, volleyball will break Harvard ($1,000), field hockey will win both of its games ($1,000 each), and men's rugby will qualify for regionals ($1,500). Finally, Syracuse will prove the BCS to be BS by beating Pittsburgh by more than 20 ($1,500). Last Week: + $9,500. Current Balance:$22,300.50

I think CB got in touch with one of the Smack Gods last week and thus somehow found a way to pull ahead of me. The time has come for me to up the ante and claim my rightful place as Smack Queen--I'm not goin' down without a fight. That said, football and field hockey will both scare the pants off (and, incidentally, beat) Penn on Halloween ($1,000 each), and volleyball will crush the Cantabs on Friday ($500). On the pro gridiron, give me the Jets over the Chiefs, the Broncos over the Bengals, the Pats over the Colts, the Giants over the 'Skins, and the 49ers over the Packers for $500 each. Last week: +$0. Current Balance:$20,760.

So, for the `n'th time in a row, I am in last place. At least I've got my good looks to keep me comfort in this, the darkest hour of my life. And I also take comfort in the fact that I get to spend my Halloween in Philly supporting a winning football team ($4,000) and watching Murawczek put another four through the uprights ($3,000). But if you happen to see me there, don't look too hard at the half-naked fool standing next to me; you might go blind. Men's rugby might be cold in that Motel 8, but they'll return from New Hamshire winners ($2,000). CB's roomie...? Gimme a break ($50). Last Week: +$800. Current Balance: $8,800

There is a simple rule to my picks: the team with the tougher mascot wins. Period. Yale's Bulldogs will maul the Quakers on the gridiron ($2,000) and the Cantabs on the volleyball court ($500). In Saturday's two big Top 25 college football matchups, Florida's No. 5 Gators will thrash Georgia's No. 12 Bulldogs ($750), but the No. 15 Arizona Wildcats will upset the No. 13 Oregon Ducks in a squeaker ($500). Look for the Jags to eat the Ravens for lunch, and for the Giants to stomp the Redskins ($500 apiece). Yale men's rugby will take at least one of two this weekend to move on in the playoffs ($1,000). Last Week: +$1,750 Current Balance: $13,451.
