Competing for roster spots, Elis aim high
Men's golf is a squad overflowing with talent. Only five
of the 18 players on the varsity team can travel for tournaments, and there are
far more than five Elis who are qualified to fill those places.
This abundance of talent means that there won't be a shortage of top Bulldog
golfers in the near future, particularly since the squad boasts a strong
freshman class. Adam Cyrus, SM '02, and John Eckerle, BR '02, both traveled to
Dartmouth and turned in solid performances.
On Mon., Oct. 5, the Bulldogs took second place out of 23 teams at the Toski
Tournament. Yale was tied for eighth place going into the final round, but "the
guys showed a lot of guts and stepped up to pull us into second," Ian
MacAllister, MC '00, said. Next week's Adams Cup tournament in Newport, R. I.
(Wed., Oct. 14 and Thurs., Oct. 15) will provide good exposure to national
competition. Yale will challenge a number of the nation's top teams, gaining
experience for spring regional play. According to MacAllister, Yale is
primarily "looking to play a solid round."
Yale won the Ivy Tournament two years ago. Last year, it lost by a single
stroke. This year, they're hoping to relive the victory of two years ago. And
with so many new recruits and all but a few of last year's top golfers on the
team, the Elis are in good shape to reclaim their Ivy crown.
