Going for a share of the title
A few weeks ago, with a 1-2 Ivy record, the men's soccer
team had nearly forgotten about the possibility of a league title. Now, after
tallying five consecutive wins, three of these against league opponents, the
Bulldogs (9-6-1, 4-2 Ivy) are back in the hunt.
It is not new for the Elis to have reversed a slow start; they have done this
each of the last three years. Coach Brian Tompkins said that the team's rebound
this year came because "we've finally overcome our rash of early season
injuries and started to play closer to our true potential."
The Elis must beat Princeton on Sat., Nov. 14 if they are to have a shot at
the league title. They will also have to count on Dartmouth to prevail over
Brown to stay in contention.
Having to rely on the results of other matches is not what the Elis had in
mind. If they had beaten Dartmouth, to whom they lost 2-1 in overtime on Sun.,
Oct. 18, they would be playing to clinch the title. "Obviously it is
frustrating to let a game like that slip away, but right now we aren't really
concerned with what happened in past games," striker Phil Harris, SM '00,
said.
Midfielder Hiro Suzuki, BR '00, added that the "added element of revenge from
last year" would serve as further motivation against Princeton. It was the
Tigers who ended the Bulldogs' title hopes last year with their victory over
Yale in the season finale.
