Scrumming for credit
Anyone who has ever wanted to tackle his or her professor is in luck.
The world's first degree course in "rugby union studies" is now being offered
by Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College in Great Britain. Students can
now ruck, maul, and scrum their way to their diploma.
The course will be taught by professional players from the Saracens Rugby
Club. They hope to help "produce players and administrators equipped for the
demands of the modern professional game. Offered after "Clapping for Credit,"
Rugby 101 covers the fundamentals of passing and kicking the crap out of the
large potato-shaped ball and each other.
Cuban missile crisis
Cuban lovers are finding out what the red light in red light district
really means. Their nation's latest shortage is in decent motel rooms for Sr.
and Sra. Juan Smith. According to the Cuban state newspaper,
Trabajadores, the number of suitable hostels in Havana has dropped from
67 in 1980 to 29 today.
The remaining `posadas' are apparently lacking in the romantic atmosphere that
we have come to expect in seedy motels the world over. Instead, the typical
Havana room provides its guests with "dirty sheets, failing ventilation, bad
music, and a bathroom `like a lagoon'" during their brief stay there. The
workers of Cuba may have lost their chains, but they haven't gained clean
sheets.
Finally, a use for Melrose Place
Never underestimate the tranquilizing powers of television. A New Delhi
family was saved from a tragedy when a leopard which had crept into their house
fell asleep in front of the TV.
Going to great lengths to catch the premiere of The X -Files,
the big cat apparently got bored when Fox News came on. The dormant beast was
discovered by an intrepid four-year-old resident of the house.
Forest department officials were called in and "tranquilized the leopard a few
hours later with a dart pistol and carried it to a zoo" after joining the cat
for a Monday Night Football party.
