Field Hockey: Bulldogs try to extend their season this weekend
With one game left in the regular season, Bulldog eyes
are focused. Only Cornell stands between the Elis and two of their biggest
goals entering the season: to finish among the top two in the Ivy League and to
qualify for postseason play. A victory this Sat., Nov. 7, will ensure the
former and put Yale in solid position for the ECAC tournament.
The Bulldogs have helped their cause by ringing up three straight victories,
the latest a win over Rhode Island on Wed., Nov. 3. Like last week's thrilling
victory over Fairfield, the Blue found itself down at halftime, this time by a
score of 2-0. During the intermission, players were forced to look at both game
adjustments and the contest's meaning for the rest of the season. "We knew we
had to step it up a few notches," Sue Barnes, DC '00, said. "And with the
postseason thoughts, there was a sense of urgency."
The Bulldogs responded with goals from Liz Gardner, DC '01, and Christine
Anthony, SM '01, to knot the game at two. Then at 4:37 of overtime, Barnes
sealed the deal and kept hopes of the ECAC tournament alive."Right now, this
team has a general confidence about it," Anthony said." And we've had great
leadership to help us through the entire year."
That senior leadership, supplied by captain Lindsay Hobbs, PC '99, and Abby
Alt, JE '99, has meant a lot to the young Elis. "Lindsay and Abby have been
phenomenal," Gardner said. "We have a huge freshman class, and they've been
great examples for everyone."
On Saturday, it's one big game versus the Big Red. And perhaps, one more
example.
