Club Sports: Masters shell out $5,000
Athletes for club sports teams such as ultimate and
rugby will no longer have to shell out as much money from their own
pockets when they travel to national competitions this year.
For the second consecutive year, the Council of Masters has voted to donate
$5,000 from its discretionary fund to club sports. This donation is supposed
"to support those teams who make it to finals," according to Pat Dallai, the
executive assistant to the Council of Masters.
The motion for the grant was brought up by Davenport Master Gerald Thomas and
passed unanimously on Fri, Oct. 23. The money goes, in grant form, to the club
sports department, which is headed by Tom Migdalski. There is no
micromanagement of the funding by the council, so club athletes work with the
department to decide how the money should be spent. "Presumably, the money
would be used to defray travel and lodging costs for the teams," Ezra Stiles
Master Paul Fry said.
While $5,000 is not a lot of money considering the number of club teams and
the costs of team travel, which includes hotel rooms and bus fare, it adds
almost an additional 20 percent to the club sport budget. Each year, the
Athletic Department allots only $27,000 to $29,000 for all aspects of Yale club
sports.
